Efficient and Sustainable Water Services in BiH

Association for Water and Environmental Protection Sector “Aquasan Network in BiH” is pleased to invite you to the three-day conference “EFFICIENT AND SUSTAINABLE WATER SERVICES IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA”. The Conference will be held in the period 17 – 19 April 2018 in Mostar, Hotel Mepas.

The Conference is organised in cooperation with the BiH Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations, Association of Municipalities and Cities of the Federation of BiH, Association of Local Authorities of Republika Srpska, Association “Waterworks of Republika Srpska” and Association of Employers of Utility Companies in Federation of BiH as well as Republika Srpska Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, Federation of BiH Ministry of Agriculture, Water Management and Forestry, Una-Sana Canton Ministry of Agriculture, Water Management and Forestry and Adriatic Water Catchment  Agency Mostar. The organisation of the Conference is supported by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) through Open Regional Fund for Modernisation of Municipal Services (OFR MMS), Danube Water Program (DWP) through International Association of Water Supply Companies in the Danube River Catchmen Area (IAWD) and World Bank.

The Embassy of Switzerland in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the partner of the Conference.

Objectives of the Conference are:

Overall Objective:

To support the improvement of sustainable water service provision and better organisation and development of individual, organisational and institutional capacities in the sector of communal water services – water supply and wastewater collection and treatment in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).

Specific Objectives:

  • To jointly discuss and define next steps required for improving the legislative – legal and institutional framework for water service provision in B&H and strengthening horizontal and vertical cooperation amongst all actors in the sector,
  • Through exchange of knowledge, information, experience and best practices, to achieve understanding on the need for a systemic approach to capacity development of Public Utility Companies (PUCs) and Local Government Units (LGUs) in BiH and performance improvement of PUCs,
  • To inform the participants about new programs and projects implemented by international financial institutions in the water service sector in BiH,
  • Through the platform for dialogue, to achieve better understanding on different cooperation models between national institutions/organisations and international financial institutions and donor organisations.

The Conference will gather most relevant actors in the communal water sector in B&H and region. Participation of representatives of PUCs from B&H which provide water supply and wastewater collection and treatment services, as well as representatives of their founders i.e. LGUs is expected. The Conference will be also participated by representatives of entity and cantonal ministries of agriculture, water management and forestry, entity and cantonal ministries dealing with environmental protection/ecology and communal affairs, entity water agencies and entity environmental protection/ecology funds, representatives of NGOs, educational institutions, students and representatives of the private sector participating in preparing and implementing different programs and projects in the sector. In addition to BiH institutions and organizations, representatives of international financial institutions i.e. development and cooperation agencies: GIZ, SDC, SIDA, USAID, JICA, UNDP; development banks and funds: World Bank, EBRD, KfW, EIB, WBIF and representatives of the Delegation of European Commission in B&H are expected to participate. Participation of associations of PUCs and associations of LGUs from the South-East Europe (Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Kosovo and Albania) as well as the Network of Associations of Local Authorities in South-East Europe – NALAS and International Association of Water Supply Companies in the Danube River Catchment Area (IAWD) is also expected.
